Which Behaviors Are You Rewarding?

John E. Jones says: “What gets rewarded gets repeated.”

Your company has developed a culture of rewarding certain types of behavior.

No, I don’t mean the official “Policy Manual.”   I mean the rewards you give to the wrong people for behaviors that, well…

Your company rewards behaviors that would be frowned upon if you HAD to make them your policy.

  • Laziness
  • Lack of respect for customers
  • Tardiness on the job
  • Excessive spending
  • Uncreative ideas that are “safe”
  • Extended lunches
  • Running down the company to fellow employees and customers
  • Putting policies before customers
  • Pointless meetings
  • Paperwork
  • Penalties for using modern tools in meetings
  • The list goes on…

Whatever the practice, if you are paying people for any of the habits above, you are rewarding their behavior.   They learned a long time ago that this was the company culture and that you will pay them for misbehaving.

Remember, if you are paying people who are not producing results OR are being rude to your customers, THEY aren’t the problem.  By continuing to pay them with no penalty, you are rewarding them.

Conversely, are you “taxing” or punishing people who creatively solve problems or go outside of the policy manual to make you look good?  Then you are actually rewarding the others who play it safe and do nothing productive.

Again they aren’t the problem…

You are.

Change your culture by rewarding the behaviors you wish everyone has.
