Ask Better Questions

Leaders don’t always have to have all of the answers.  It’s not always about showing you are smarter with your answers.

Great leaders know how to ask better questions.  They know how to motivate others to seek out answers that they can deal with on their own terms.

I learned in coach training:

  • Mentoring is about giving answers and solutions.  A mentor gives answers.
  • Coaching is about asking great questions and allowing everyone involved to seek a workable solution.  A coach asks great questions.

People who answer the questions are more prone to support their answers and vision.  They are also more likely to attain the goals they set themselves.

A great leader guides people in setting those goals by asking better questions than the group can ask on their own.

When was the last time you challenged a room full of people with great questions (instead of giving them the answers you came up with)?

It’s not about you…it’s about them.
