Broadcast on WII-FM: What’s In It – For Me?

Whenever you “broadcast”(read: market) something of value to you, how do you communicate it to others so that they “get it,” like it and want it?

Simple formula:
1. Here is what I know.   2. Here is how I know it.   3. Here is what it means to YOU!

Let me illustrate:
1. Recessions Never End. Every recession we have had leaves a lasting mark on us, on society and on history. They all carry baggage for many, many years.

2. Since the recession of 2000-2001, coupled with the events of 9/11, no one will ever travel on an airplane or attend a major event without tight security again.  Watch an old movie showing airline travel in the pre-recession 9/11 days.  Like Airport, Airplane or even This is Spinal Tap.  What security there is looks like a joke compared to the headlines of TSA officials and scanner today. It will never go back to where it was in 1999…ever again.

3. You are now functioning in a culture and environment where everything is changed by one event.  You can either gripe about the changes and refuse to adjust, OR you can adjust and turn the changes into an opportunity (like the guy who invented x-ray proof technology for people to go through scanners without feeling molested.  Or take a bus (but security is a little tighter there, too).  We are either victims of events and catastrophes or we learn how to seize the moment and make the best of them, adjusting for the differences – becoming victors.

What changes have taken place in your world and what have you done to make the most of them to your (and your customers’) benefit?

Using this formula, Abraham Lincoln changed the focus of the American Civil War. Using this formula, pastors, rabbis, imams and priests change lives every holy day.

How can YOU use this formula to change your world?

Thank you! “Reinvention Made Easy” became a Best Seller one day after launch.  Read why the economy isn’t down; it’s different.

Launch Day, August 29, 2011

Have you ever felt like it’s time for something different?  Maybe you have felt like what you’re doing just isn’t working anymore.  The economy is different, you’re different, and other people are different.  Everything is different in today’s global market.

In 2008 I found myself, like many others, wondering what to do when what had been working for so many years just stopped producing results the way it once did.  I found that what succeeded for me just a few years earlier had become obsolete.

I knew that I wouldn’t succeed with the old strategies and thoughts.  I knew that in order to move forward I had to reinvent myself!!

When I did, things began to change.  My phone began to ring again, business began to boom.  People began to ask me, “How I did you do it?”  “Why are you doing so well when so many others are not?”  The new differences put me in demand.

So I wrote a book to help other business leaders and professionals reinvent themselves too.

9/11 Ten Years Later: Turn Tragedy Into Opportunity – Gear Up!

Are you a “frequent flyer?”  If you have flown anywhere in the past 10 years, then you are probably well aware of increasing x-ray technology in use at airports worldwide.   It became an opportunity for one person to reinvent themselves…

Jeff Buske, Rocky Flats Gear, Inc.

“Prior to September 11, 2001, I was in electrical engineering designing hands free cellphone interfaces.  The tragic events that day impacted our foreign policy and significantly changed air travel with loss of liberty and excessive searching.

I turned into an inventor, materials expert, art director, web master and designer of x-ray absorbing garments.  The products offer a level of protection and privacy from radiation based airport and security scanners.

We (my wife and I) designed a family of products to address the loss of privacy and dignity from the deployment of powerful airport scanners.

Now, ten years later I am busy running an online radiation protective garment business shipping product worldwide. We are secure in the satisfaction that we are doing some small part to educate and promote public health on a global platform.”

9/11 Ten Years Later: Turn Tragedy Into Opportunity – Wake Up!

The tragedy of 9/11 was a turning point in the US and as a result, many people reinvented themselves.  Many have sent in their stories of heroism, devastation and inspiration.  The stories are fascinating.  They are ordinary people thrust into extraordinary situations.  The events that day changed their lives forever.

No, you can’t stop terrible things from happening to you. You CAN manage the way you react and respond in the wake of tragedy.

Here is a simple, gripping story of an individual who made a choice that morning which influenced the rest of his life:

Mike Jaffe, Jaffe Life Design LLC
Mike writes: “I worked on the 96th floor of the World Trade Center as a Corporate Marketer.  The first plane hit my desk.  However, I survived that day because I had decided to have breakfast with my wife and daughter that morning and go in late to work.  The events of that day not only prompted me to change careers but also gave me the internal fire and vision to completely transform my life.

I lost my boss, most of my team and many friends and coworkers on September 11th, which served as a painful but powerful reminder of how precious life truly is.  I knew that I could never again settle for a life that was simply ‘fine.’

As a result of my own wake up call (which actually occurred on Sept 10th when I made the plan to have that breakfast the next morning), I radically changed directions in my career, leaving a secure corporate job in Manhattan and reinventing myself as a motivational speaker and professional business and personal coach.

Over the last decade, through my coaching and speaking work I’ve had the honor and privilege of working with thousands of brilliant, intelligent and highly creative individuals to help them transition their own lives, enabling them to shift their perspective, deepen their relationships, and create and realize the vision they have for themselves in ways they couldn’t have imagined previously.

I see myself as a “Human Wakeup Call,” waking people up so they achieve more business success and a higher quality of life.  I have set a goal of having a million members join what I call the Wakeup Revolution™.”

How have you managed to turn a personal crisis into an opportunity and reinvent yourself?

Tell us your story.

Is Burger King Reinventing Itself?

Burger King announced that it is dropping the “creepy” King character mascot and placing its focus on health-conscious Moms, according to a report August 19 on

Why? Creepy doesn’t sell well.

Healthy sells great!

Apparently, so does avocado (for the same reason).  The same report said that BK is planning to go nationwide with it’s “California Whopper” which features guacamole.  Subway rolled out avocado as an additional option (for an increased price) for it’s customers.  Why?

Again, “health conscious.” Diners are now looking at ingredients more and looking for a healthier menu.  Avocados rate high with healthy eaters.

People will pay MORE for a healthier diet. Go in to Trader Joe’s, Harry’s Market or Whole Foods and you will see how well it sells.

Even at a higher price!  It’s really a no brainer.

Questions:  What movement is going on in your industry that will pass you by if you don’t get in on it?  What are people willing to pay MORE to for whomever gives it to them?

The economy isn’t down; it’s different!

When What You’re Doing Isn’t Working Anymore…Speak Out!

Grow Your Business Network – Concord, MA

In May 2005 Nancy Michaels underwent an emergency liver transplant due to a virus that attacked her organs.  Nancy says, “I was in a coma for two months, underwent brain surgery while in a coma, died twice on the operating table — the second time for more than two minutes, had a trachea, aspergillum in my lungs, arterial line infection, etc.  After three months in ICU (two of which were in a coma), I was transferred to rehab for six weeks and re-admitted to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston for ‘failure to thrive.’”

Nancy eventually returned to her parent’s home for six months of round-the clock care and 10 more hospital visits from two to 11 night stays. Although she had lost custody of her three children, she was able to regain them, go back to work and become financially stable.  Finally, a year later, she was able to live on her own.

Millennial This!

The Millennial Generation, Gen Y and their followers are a force to be reckoned with…and valued.   They possess many attributes and qualities that are required to keep your workplace and business on the cutting edge.

But they have limited tolerance for the way you do business in their scheme of the world.   As Gen Y moves from company to company, they get fed up with leaders who try to treat everyone fairly.

Here are the challenges and the advantages to work effectively with and inspire Millennials:

Challenge 1 – Millennials are on the go!  They aren’t content to stay in one place.   Advantage – Millennials aren’t wedded to putting down roots so change is a part of their lives.

Challenge 2 – Millennials hate routine jobs and assignments.   Advantage – Millennials are attracted to jobs where they are challenged and can connect with others through familiarity with communications, media, and digital technologies.

Challenge 3 – Millennials aren’t very loyal to a brand or company.   Advantage – Millennials are the most connected group of people the world has ever seen.

Challenge  4– Millenials aren’t committed to traditional affiliations like political parties; old fashioned benevolent charities; what their parents valued or their grandparents.    Advantage – Millennials are committed to causes…like eco-friendly, organic, helping others in need and supporting the downtrodden.

Challenge 5 – Millennials have very short attention spans and don’t play well on teams with a strict hierarchy.  Advantage – Millennials offer multi-tasking options and welcome frequent change.

When What You’re Doing Isn’t Working Anymore…Suck it Up!

Crucial Vacuum – Spanish Harlem, NY
Chad Rubin had always been looking for a way to get out of finance and when the economy tried to make him a victim and he was laid-off from his job as an equity research associate on Wall Street, he saw opportunity rather than loss.  Chad saw a niche opportunity in the online retail sector and using his previous skills and experience, reinvented his career, building ecommerce business,, from the ground up.

Rather than becoming the middle-man and acting as a value added reseller of other companies vacuum cleaner components, Crucial Vacuum got rid of the middle-man.  They manufacture and sell their own brand of high quality filters, bags, and belts made to fit the top models of most major vacuum cleaner brands.  The company sells direct to the consumer, focuses on customer service and satisfaction, and has grown to a five-person operation.

When asked about the results of reinventing his career, this was Chad’s response.  “Phenomenal growth on the top-line and bottom-line, along with a much better positive spirit.”

When What You’re Doing Isn’t Working Anymore… Get Lijit!

Lijit Networks – Boulder, CO
When it was founded in 2006, Lijit Networks offered free search tools that websites could use to provide search capabilities within their own site.  They built a strong customer base accumulating user base of more 12,000 online publishers and bloggers in the first three years.  Sounds like a smashing success, right?  It was, just not at making money.  In 2009, after several failed attempts at using display advertising to generate revenue, CEO Todd Vernon was faced with a tough decision, find a way to reinvent Lijit into a profitable business, or watch his company die.

Vernon started by completing changing the direction of the company.  By letting go the original vision which could not be monetized, he was able to reposition Lijit as a value-added partner in the mid-size online publishing market who delivers products that facilitate channel ad delivery and offer insight into audience analytics.

The result? The company increased revenue from $60k in 2009 to $2.8m in 2010.  On track to top $10m in revenue by 2012,  Lijit serves an average of 100 million ad transactions per day and boasts a publisher network of more than 40 million sites.

When What You’re Doing Isn’t Working Anymore…

Whether the market has outgrown your product, or you have outgrown your position, deciding to reinvent your companies, your life, or yourself can mean the difference between success and failure. Sometimes that decision is forced by the hand of the economy, other times it is offered by the hand of opportunity, and it can also come out of the ashes of great loss and tragedy.  Regardless of the circumstances that bring you to that crossroads, reinvention is the choice that opens new doors, offers the promise of potential, and optimizes your chances for success.

Learning happens best when we learn by example.  You can often find something in another’s experience that provides the spark of inspiration you need to light our own fire.  Here are some great examples of people and companies who chose to reinvent themselves by opening the door to potential and who found success on the other side.

Tippi Toes Franchise – Broken Arrow/Owasso, OK
Karri Jones is many things, but the most important things are being a wife, being a mother, and being present and available for her family.  After building a successful career in the financial services industry, she found herself at a crossroads after the birth of her daughter.  Faced with the choice so many families must make, should she sacrifice time with her child so she could continue to bring money into the household or find a way to survive without her income so she could stay home to raise her child, she decided the only option was to find a way to do both.

In mid-2010, Karri and her husband became the owners of the Broken Arrow/Owasso Tippi Toes children’s dance company franchise.  With no background in dance or experience running a small business, Karri’s decision to reinvent herself through her work was a true leap of faith inspired by her desire to make a difference in the lives of children, including her own.  She chose this particular franchise because the values of the company aligned with her own which opened the door for her to have her daughter with her, bring money into the household, and find fulfillment in her work as she watched self-esteem and creativity blossom in each of her dancers.  With the support of the franchise, her fellow franchisees, and her husband, Karri conquered a challenging learning curve and finished the first year a solid success.

In her own words, Karri explained what reinvention has meant to her.  “I never could have imagined being here, but I’m so glad we took the leap.  Nothing but great things ahead!  My daughter has her mom and my husband has a wife who is fulfilled in her work and therefore a much better partner.  Change is scary but the rewards are priceless.”
